Footprints project

The FOOTPRINTS project launches Ravenna as a pilot city at European level for sustainable tourism.

Footprints aims to make Ravenna a destination where green and responsible choices become not only more convenient, but also easier, funnier and rewarding for tourists. The project will involve tourists, the local community, tour operators and accommodation businesses to create an integrated tourism system promoting eco-friendly behaviours, inter-zonal transportation services and an authentic and engaging tourism experience.

The project is multi-pronged and aims at creating an urban ecosystem in which regeneration is an integral part of every aspect of visiting Ravenna:

  • Digitalisation of tourist services: an intuitive digital platform will guide tourists during their stay, offering not only tourist information, but also mobility options and booking services, integrated with a system of incentives;
  • Temporary citizenship and gamification: tourists will be encouraged to become “temporary citizens” of Ravenna through a gamification system, which rewards sustainable choices with benefits during the visit, such as discounts or local experiences;
  • Green mobility and local infrastructures: welcome hub for rental and service on environmentally friendly vehicles, such as bicycles and electric vehicles;
  • Sustainability in accommodations: local tourism businesses will be involved in an environmental sustainability journey, with the goal of obtaining green certifications and ensuring eco-friendly options for lodging and dining for visitors;
  • Infrastructures for universal accessibility: paths and street furniture will be designed to ensure full accessibility of the historical center, with special attention to the needs of the elderly, disabled and schools.

Funded as part of the European Urban Iniaiative – Innovative Actions with 5 million euros, the project will run for 42 months, from 1st December 2024 to 31st May 2028 and is coordinated by the Municipality of Ravenna with the support of a broad partnership that includes local and international players, including Ravenna Incoming, the Eutropian association, Azimut Spa, Vista Tecnologie, ART-ER, Cooperativa San Vitale, Atlantide and the cities of Veszprém (Hungary), Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Altea (Spain).
