The coastal dunes

The coast of Ravenna is characterised by COASTAL DUNES typical of the lowland coastlines. The dunes are up to 2 metres high and are formed thanks to constant modelling caused by the wind and swells of the sea.

This characteristic environment fosters the growth of a very typical vegetation including sea rocket, sand couch-grass and marram grass, vivaciously colouring the surrounding area.

WHERE TO FIND THE DUNES

It is possible to find some dunes in the beach towns of Punta Marina Terme and Marina di Ravenna, but in terms of dimension and state of preservation the most impressive ones can be found in the northern beach towns (Porto Corsini, Marina Romea and Casalborsetti).

Here, the perennial species look like a sort of meadow, which can be more or less dense, covering both the dunes at an early stage in the front and in the back.

South of Ravenna is a particularly noteworthy system of dunes, located between Lido di Dante and Lido di Classe, in the area of the Mouth of the Bevano river. The mouth, the dunes and the lagoons create an unspoilt landscape – a picture of what the regional coastline must have looked like before human intervention.

Both the areas in the north and in the south are important biotopes for the presence of endangered plant and animal species, which were included in the Po Delta Park that protects them.

FOCUS

A DELICATE BALANCE TO PROTECT

Climate change, including sea-level rise and extreme weather events, can accentuate coastal erosion. Coastal dunes play a crucial role in protecting our coastline from erosion and in protecting pine forests from salinisation.

Coastal dunes act as a natural physical barrier between the sea and the land, and its presence helps to reduce the direct impact of waves and currents on the coast.

Thanks to the boardwalks, you can access the beach without directly stepping on the dunes, thus avoiding damages and changes to the delicate balance of this special ecosystem, unique habitat for many species of animals and plants.
