Involved in the valorisation of the heritage of Ravenna since its foundation in 2002, MAR – Ravenna Art Museum – is located in the Loggia del Giardino, the wonderful cloister of the Santa Maria in Porto abbey built at the beginning of the 16th century and better known as Loggetta Lombardesca.
In addition to contemporary art exhibitions, the museum permanently hosts more than 300 paintings and sculptures and a large collection of contemporary mosaics that illustrate the (not only) local art scene from the 14th century until today.
Along with Classis Ravenna Museum, Mar is also the location of Laboratorio Aperto – a meeting point for the enjoyment of cultural heritage, digital culture fostering and technological innovation. Laboratorio Aperto is a pole of attraction for citizens and strategic digital innovation and represents the contribution of the region to the Urban Agenda for the EU. The project recognises the city a central role in the territory and includes qualification of the cultural heritage and development of all factors that can foster the participation of citizens to the strategic choices of the city thanks to the use of ICTs.
